The bike has 145 hours, pretty hard hours I would say. On a typical compression test I'm getting 150 PSI, 180 with a drop or 2 of oil. Hooked up my leak down tester, this was the strange part, the bike is showing absolutely 0 leak down but I can hear and feel air transferring through the case even at a low 40psi. . As per the user manual, the compression ratio for KTM 390 is 12.88:1 To convert this to PSI (pounds per square inch), the compression ratio has to be multiplied with atmospheric pressure. The atmospheric pressure at sea level is 14.69 PSI Therefore, 12.88 * 14.69 = 189 PSI Now, KTM 390 engines come with auto decompressor pin on the left valve .
I'm getting a reading of 132 psi on a compression test of my 2003 KTM 450 EXC racing. The carb is off of the engine, and the reading was taken running the electric starter for about 5 strokes. . Never mind; I answered my own question by doing a leakdown test. The 132 psi reading corresponded to a leakdown reading of about 98%, so it was fine. If you call the tech dept of most mfgs they are going to ask if you have done a leakdown test. KTM does have a TDC locking screw to help perform the test. . I just ran a compression test on my 2011 KTM 150XC and got just shy of 100psi. I did the test with the engine warm, three kicks with the throttle WO. The first kick would usually give me ~50-60 psi the second would bring me to 70-80 psi and the third would give me 90-100psi. The bike has 53. As for testing the compression, warm the engine, ground the spark plug wire to the frame. Then with the test gauge in place hold the throttle open and kick the starter over like you mean it until the needle doesn't climb any higher. There you go.thats it. More critical is jetting. Make sure its on or the bike will run like krapola. My son has a 2007 ktm 85 which is due a top end rebuild (he is also saying it is down on power). . I've just bought a 2017 2-stroke w 22 hours on the meter. Compression test values should be close to brand new. Looking up the exhaust and in the intake, everything looks great and there is plenty of resistance on the kickstart. I'm thinking about buying a compression tester if this is a good means to keep track of when to rebuild. Poor a little 2 Stroke in the Cylinder. It will work its way around. Do a compression test after that. If it goes up to normal numbers. Cylinder wall or bad ring seating. Answer the questions above. If the numbers stay relatively the same. Then it might be a guage. Make sure you are holding the throttle wide open when kicking.
